A Historic Recording

In 1928, the Columbia Grafonola Co. Ltd. released this historic record to celebrate the opening of the 'Tyne Bridge' in Newcastle, England dedicated by the British Monarch, King George V.
It features the speech made by King George V at the opening cermony and on the reverse, a reply by the Mayor of Gateshead.

What makes it so unique is that it’s a work of art too. Engraved on the face of the record is a picture of the bridge and the Royal & city coats of arms.

HISTORY:

The 'Tyne Bridge' was designed by architects Mott, Hay and Anderson, who some say based their design on the as yet unfinished Sydney Harbour Bridge!
It has to be said that the two bridges bear an uncannily similar design, so much so that many "Jordies" claim that it was entirely the other way around! Sydney Harbour Bridge was in fact clearly a copy of the Tyne Bridge!

The innovative structure which cost £1,200,000 to build and with a span of 531 feet, was opened on the 10th of October1928 by King George V and Queen Mary, who were the very first to use the roadway, riding 84 feet above the water in their Ascot Landau.

The scheme to build the Tyne river bridge, goes way back to 1883 but it wasn't until 1924 that the plan to build a new major river crossing finally got the go ahead.
Building contractors Dorman Long of Middlesbrough, began construction in August of 1925
and at the time, it was the largest single span bridge in the world. It remains until today, one of the most notable landmarks in the north of England.

Georgian Silversmith:

Paul Storr:  Born 1771 London - Died March 4, 1844, London

Paul Storr was a master craftsman and has been called the last of the great silversmiths in England , clearly one of history's greatest ever.

Son of Thomas Storr, a silver chaser by trade, Paul was apprenticed early, at the age of 14 (1785) to another of Britiains most highly regarded silversmiths, Andrew Fogelberg.

In 1792 Storr entered his first signature mark in partnership with William Frisbee but within months had surpassed many of his years and registered his own hallmark.
Such was the quality and exquisiteness of his work, even as a young man, that soon after the year 1800, he began working almost exclusively, for 'Rundell Bridge and Rundell' - who were the Royal Goldsmiths in London.

He escalated rapidly up the ladder and by 1811 continuing through to 1819 he was a partner in Rundell's.

A brand new working relationship started in 1822 with John Mortimer who was a Bond Street retailer but this was not financiallystable and there were often conflicts of minds and temperament. This partnership was maintained until 1838 when he retired as an affluent man to Tooting in South West London where he finished his days.

A notable example of his outstanding craftsmanship and marking the level of his esteem in which he was held , is the cup made for presentation to the British Admiral Lord Nelson, to mark his victory at the Battle of the Nile in 1798.
(National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London).
Today, Paul Storrs works are some of the most sought after and valuable object d'art of their kind in the world.
