Frank Franz Johnston. Canadian Artist and Painter of the Group of Seven. 1888-1949 Photo: Jackie Freeman Photography
The Rendezvous - Oil on canvas Surfacing for the first time in 50 years was this very large oil by Franz Johnston bought from the artist himself just after he left the Group of Seven. Sadly, Canadian central heating and storage in an attic with dramatic temperature changes have taken its toll on the artwork with serious craquelure and paint shrinkage bringing down what should have been a high five figure sum considerably.

Mr.W. brought us a wonderful mechanical wood folk art carving that his grandfather had planned and executed in the late 1800's. He also had the actual drawn plans and a photo of his grandfather sitting at his bench carving the scene. The intricate carving consisted of a milkmaid milking a cow, the action of her hands milking caused a white stream to appear, the cow chewing her cud and ears moving. The little pig, who was feeding from a bucket nearby, moved its' head up and down and the corkscrew tail moved back and forth. In a nearby spot, close to the cow, a frog was moving up and down as if jumping to catch a fly! The plans showed the mechanical works that caused all the movement and were encased under the scene. Altogether a work of pride, patience and art that can be enjoyed by grandfather's family and a piece that brings much pride to the family of Mr. W.
