George  Tinworth

Doulton Potter and Designer

The British pottery company that eventually grew to be Royal Doulton was first called the Doulton & Watts pottery.

It was co - founded in 1815 by English potter John Doulton (1794-1873) in Lambeth, London in the time of prime minister Robert Banks Jenkinson, the second Earl of Liverpool who was to receive nothing of the acclaim and fame of young Doulton himself!

The dramatic success of the Doulton company was due in the main to it's incredible product diversity ranging from sanitary and decorative ware right through to household pottery and fine China. And this in turn, fired by the creative leadership of John Doulton, gave rise to a new and innovative breed of vibrant potters and designers emerging from the ranks.

GEORGE TINWORTH - BRIEF BIOGRAPHY:

The young potter George Tinworth had little aspiration to be an artist as a boy yet was to become one of the most acclaimed & accomplished of all Victorian potters.

George Tinworth was born on November 5th1843 in Walworth,  England . Tinworth's mother encouraged his carving and modelling when he was a young lad and he eventually pawned his overcoat in order to enroll in the Lambeth School of Art to study pottery under John Sparkes.

At the age of 21, Tinworths talent as a modeller and potter was recognized and this won him a place at the Royal Academy School. By 1866 George Tinworth had been spotted by John Doulton and went to work for Doulton at the Lambeth factory to eventually become their most important designer of decorative vases, jugs and humorous figures.

He also designed decorative tiles and terracotta reliefs for buildings, including Doulton.

George Tinworth was to spend the rest of his career working for Doulton & Co., becoming their chief and most acclaimed modeler.
