The Kozlov Centre in Ontario, canada, gave us yet another rare Doulton piece.

HN26

'Diligent Scholar'

This is the Very rare Royal Doulton Figurine "The Diligent Scholar", first made in 1913 as a companion piece to HN16, 'the sleepy scholar.'

It was modelled by William White, one of 5 modellers working for Doulton in the early 20th Century. 'Charltons' Standard price guide, makes reference to one figurine HN26 in a mottled brown and green colourway and values it at  $11,000.00 CDN.

The subject figurine brought in for appraisal ( not shown as a courtesy to the client) is in a blue white colourway and there is no mention in the Doulton book of this colour!
Usually even non production pieces are mentioned.

Since White only modelled  3 figurines for Doulton, this figurine would be up there with the "rarest of  the rare " in my opinion!!

At the least it should command double the price of the known figurines making it worth in the neighbourhood of $20,000+.
The blue/white is also a much more attractive colour and it makes me wonder why it was not put into production, probably not as fashionable at the time. This is the 3rd very rare Doulton uncovered in Canada in the last 3 months.
How many more are out there?? Watch for a roadshow in your area and bring in those Doulton's as you too may have another undiscovered treasure.

ROYAL DOULTON DESIGNERS:

Charles Noke

Charles J Noke ( british)

From the Royal Worcester factory in England, came the brilliant English ceramic designer Charles John Noke who was to became the senior designer and modeller for the Royal Doulton company in 1889.

The son of a well respected antique dealer, Noke was Born in Worcester, England in 1858.

Encouraged by R W Binns, the director of the Worcester Royal Porcelain company a good friend of his father, he spent hours in the modelling room of the critically acclaimed modeller James Hadley who had enjoyed great success at exhibitions in London and Vienna. it was thus ineviatble, that he signed an apprenticeship with Hadley and Binns at the age of only fifteen.

In the successful career which followed, noke built up a formidable reputation in Engkland as a skilled modeller of ornamental vases and figurines and was the inventor (in conjunction with Bernard Moore) of the famous Doulton ‘Flambe’ glazes which first appeared in 1904 as well as the ‘Chang’ ware and ‘Chinese Jade’ that is so popular among today’s collectors. But Most popular of all of Charles Noke’s work are his figurines which were to receive royal patronage from Queen Mary following a visit to the factory.

Noke was the driving force behing the HN series of figurines which represented a revival of the Staffordshire figurines of the 18th century and Once again, it was the insight of Charles Noke that prompted the widespread production of character jugs in 1934 with his "John Barleycorn"

The largest number of figurines made by Royal Doulton must be the "fair ladies" type, but a number of figurines reflect childhood themes. The Kate Greenaway series is a typical example.
Other well loved Doulton Characters are street vendors, nautical and pirate figures, country folks as well as mature ladies, clowns and a raft of various occupations.

From literature, there are Dickens and Shakespearean characters, even soldiers of the Revolution and a Williamsburg series in addition to a wide range of other historical characters that were produced.

Listed as "very Rare" is 'The carpet vendor' #163 (Illustrated right)designed by Noke.

It surfaced at a roadshow in london ontario.

I have seen it listed as high as $6,500.00 usd on the internet.
